A Masterclass with DAN ATTIAS
|
Dan is considered an actor’s director, working on many of the most significant, performance-based shows on television. He considers the creative challenge in film to be a collaboration, in which honest, fully inhabited performances are often the most crucial element. His approach in workshops is to explore with the participants how they understand the scenes they have prepared, and then to gently include them in the process he undergoes himself as a director in a form of self-inquiry and exploration. This workshop is designed for the actor looking to bring more depth, understanding and emotional connection to their performance. The result will be on-set performances that do not look like "acting" but instead, fully realized, authentic, and deeply human. Dan will guide participants in an exploration of what is at issue in the material they are working on - have they defined it in a way they can care about it personally and are they honestly connecting emotionally? As storytellers, Dan’s belief is that we all need to take responsibility for making the story worth telling, at the same time that we serve it. Only by asking the hard questions – and admitting when we don’t yet have the answers – can the inquiry possibly lead to elegant, authentic solutions and a better, more lived-in performance. The class will not be an “on-camera” experience. It will be treated as a rehearsal, hopefully freeing the participants to move and explore without the worry and restrictions a camera might impose. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of how to realize what makes their scenes tick, personalize their characters’ deeper motivations, and craft a scenes that feels fully alive and honest.
“The actor’s job is to make the story worth telling — by asking the hard questions, connecting emotionally, and collaborating with honesty.”
— Dan Attias
